Beddingfield takes double header over SSS

SMITHFIELD — The Smithfield-Selma girls varsity basketball team couldn’t hold off senior post player Makayla Everette and Beddingfield as they lost 44-42 at home Monday night.
Everette had 15 points in the fourth and led all scorers with 24 points. The Spartans (7-6, 0-1 3-A GNRC) had a chance to win as juniors Khaliyah Peacock and Z’niah Thaggard hit two 3-pointers in the last 21 seconds after Beddingfield got a five-second violation after Thaggard’s 3-pointer. The Spartans got hit with an intentional foul, but the Bruins (8-4, 0-1 2-A EPC). Beddingfield then turned it over on the inbound with two seconds left. Smithfield-Selma wasn’t able to get a shot up on the inbound.
Peacock finished with 15 points with nine in the fourth quarter. Thaggard tallied 11 points, while freshman Kayla Robertson had eight points.
The Spartans have lost three straight and four of their last six. Smithfield-Selma will travel to Cleveland on Friday.
Smithfield-Selma boys drops ninth straight, can’t hold lead
The Smithfield-Selma boys varsity basketball team didn’t fare much better as they gave up a five point lead with 4 minutes left as they lost to Beddingfield, 61-56.
The Spartans (1-12, 0-1 3-A GNRC) led 54-49 with 4:49, but then hit a scoring drought as they didn’t score again until the 36 second mark. The Bruins went on 12-0 run in that time.
“The past two games, we’ve been right there, but then we couldn’t close it out,” Smithfield-Selma head coach Matt Cuddington said. “A lot of that is because we are so young. It’s growing pains. We just don’t know how to win yet.”
Smithfield-Selma sophomore Jaylen Hinton led all scorers with 20 points after making six 3-pointers. Senior Elijah Weir and junior Darius Faulk both scored ten points. Sophomore Jaylen White also had nine points.
Beddingfield had three scorers in double digits as Nathan Coley, Raquan Batts and Kaleb Harris combined for 44 points.
The Spartans will be back in action on Friday against Cleveland.
