Wayne Country Day gets road split with rival Greenfield
2 min readThe Wayne Country Day girls basketball team had no problem taking care of business. However, the Charger boys struggled to keep pace.
Maurice Jones’ Lady Chargers picked up a 67-24 victory over Greenfield on Friday night. Freshman guard Ja’Kea picked up where she left off with 16 points, but it was senior Lexi Jeffreys who dominated the second half en route to 18 points of her own.
“We were offensive minded and played great defense,” Jeffreys said about the game. “Coach Jones emphasized getting a lot of fast break points and that’s where most of our offense came from tonight. He also told me to take advantage of my size and skills in the paint.”
The Chargers were beaten on the glass by a talented Knights squad. They were down by as many as 18, but cut the deficit to 10 going into the fourth.
“I think we gave up too many offensive rebounds,” head coach Keith McLawhorn said. “We failed to box out (Greenfield senior forward Trey Pittman) on numerous occasions. That was a big difference in the game especially in the first half.”
Jaden Cooper led the way with 18 points. Mike Best Jr. and Linwood Grandy had 17 points while Carlos Raven added 10. The Wayne Country Day boys face West Brunswick on Monday while the girls are off until Tuesday when they take on Wayne Christian.
