DOYLE RULES: Comets headed to fourth round

CLAYTON — Senior Ryan Doyle ruled the night as the Clayton varsity boys soccer team won its third round matchup in the North Carolina High School Athletic Association 3-A playoffs with a 6-1 win over New Hanover on Wednesday.
Doyle found the back of the net three times in the first half, as the Comets (18-5-2) put in five goals in the last 23 minutes of the first half.
“That score is nowhere indicative of the levelness of this game,” Clayton head coach John Asmussen said. “That’s a really good team we played tonight. They possessed the ball very well in the first ten minutes, but we just finished all our chances in the first half. I mean they’re a good team, they outplayed us for spurts. We just finished our chances tonight and played solid defensively.”
Luke Rodgers also added in two goals. Johnny Escobar put in the first goal of the night.
This team is the first Clayton boys soccer team to go to the fourth round of the playoffs, and the third in Johnston County history. The four-seeded Comets will now travel to Jacksonville on Saturday.
