WJG SPORTS FOOTBALL PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Cleveland’s Dakota Marquess

2 min read

Nobody in the WJG Sports coverage area has racked up more tackles than Cleveland senior Dakota Marquess.

“It’s been a great opportunity with this being my senior season, so this is my last chance to accomplish what I want to accomplish anything I want to get accomplished,” Marquess said. “I think so far I’ve done a pretty good job of accomplishing my goals.”

The senior linebacker has broken the school’s single season record for tackles with 144.

“It’s huge,” junior linebacker Hunter Morris said. “As a defense, we know we can always look at him and know he’ll make the play. Whether we are down, up, no matter what the conditions are.”

Marquess and Morris lead a linebacker group that has over 350 tackles, 19 sacks and 4 interceptions between them.

“Our defense doesn’t work if every person doesn’t do their job,” Morris said. “Our defense sets the linebackers up to make a bunch of plays, which we usually do make the plays, but our d-line and DBs are just as good if not better than us.”

Marquess has had only two games where didn’t record at least 10 tackles. The senior backer is the first defense only player to receive the WJG Sports football player of the week.

“Just being able to play and practice with other great linebackers is one way that makes each other better,” Marquess said. “Also the coaching we have is phenomenal. There’s very few mistakes we’re allowed to make and get away with it.”

Dakota Marquess is the WJG Sports football player of the week for week 12.
