Cleveland’s season ends in round two

CLAYTON — The Cleveland Rams volleyball team’s season ended in four sets as the long and athletic Terry Sanford took the North Carolina High School Athletic Association match in four sets on Tuesday night.

The 4-seed in the NCHSAA 3-A East Rams (21-4) didn’t feel like they played their best game, but it was a very close contest as they scored 22, 24 and 21 in the three sets they lost.

“I thought we did okay, but it wasn’t our best match,” Cleveland head coach Shelley Johnston said. “They made us make too many mistakes. They scored a lot on the balls that we hit out. They came with a lot of intensity and they came to win.”

Johnston made sure to celebrate her senior class that has went 95-17, won four straight conference championships and went to the Eastern Region semifinals three times.

“To come back and do what they did after losing all of our starting seniors last year, that was huge,” Johnston said. “They’ve definitely left something behind.”
