WJG SPORTS FOOTBALL PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Cleveland’s Skyler Locklear
2 min readThe success of Cleveland’s running game has made some believe that Cleveland is one-dimensional. In week 10, Clayton put that theory to the test. Cleveland sophomore quarterback Skyler Locklear punished them with five passing touchdowns.
“I was excited to show everyone that we can do more than just running,” Locklear said. “That I can do more than just sit in the pocket and throw. Just show everyone what I got.”
Locklear came into this season with big shoes to fill after Darius Ocean moved. Ocean accounted for nearly 4,000 yards and 44 touchdowns. So this season, Locklear has accounted for over 2,500 yards of offense and 37 touchdowns.
“We always thought he would be able to fill this role and be very successful,” Rams head coach Scott Riley said. “I think it was about halfway through the junior varsity season, and I think it was coach (Joseph) Capps said if anything happens to Darius we could win quite a few games with him at quarterback.”
The sophomore signal caller has tied the Rams best 12-game start in school history. Cleveland was one game away from the state championship game last year and Locklear said they are focused on winning their last game of the season.
“We just get ready for the week, no matter who we’re playing,” Locklear said.
Skyler Locklear is the WJG SPORTS football player of the week for week 10.
