C.B. Aycock 21, Goldsboro 14

The C.B. Aycock varsity football team used six turnovers and a Tae Jackson touchdown to beat Goldsboro for the first time since 2014.

Jackson scored the final touchdown in the third quarter with the game tied at 14. Jackson also scooped up a fumble in the end zone late in the fourth to keep the Cougars (2-2) from scoring. The fumble came on a controversial play where sophomore Deontay Hooker threw a short pass to Jykeis McClean on third and goal. McClean appeared to catch it and cross the goal line to tie the game at 21 in the fourth quarter, but fumbled when he reached for the goal line.

“We got to minimize mistakes — mental and physical,” Goldsboro head coach Tim Ray said. “Some unfortunate series of events happened tonight. If we make our assignments, do things like we supposed to and minimize mistakes — we’d probably be in better shape tonight.”

The Falcons (3-1) led 14-7 at halftime until a pick-6 by Dorian Rodgers tied the game up. The Falcons fought back by leaning on Jackson, even after Jackson fumbled in the drive after the pick-6. Aycock head coach Scott Brooks said the resilience shown by his team made him proud.

“When I got to Aycock, they told me, when things got tough, that’s when Aycock folded,” the seventh-year head coach said. “That’s something culture wise that we tried to instill in these guys is to keep playing the next play, finish, all of those cliches you want me to throw out.
