WJG SPORTS FOOTBALL PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Goldsboro’s Jykeis Mclean

2 min read

He’s a receiver, a running back, a defensive back, a returner and a kicker.

“Some boys call him the cheat code,” Goldsboro head coach Tim Ray.

Goldsboro’s Jykeis Mclean is off to a great start in his senior year. During his time at Goldsboro, Mclean has been a model for what a Goldsboro football player is.

“I just want to be a leader of the team,” Mclean said. “Step up, do what I have to do for us to get the win. Step up and be a leader, a captain.”

Mclean has been his best at the biggest moments. Against Eastern Wayne in week two, Mclean caught a 40-yard touchdown pass to bring the Cougars within a score. Then his twenty yard catch with under a minute in the same game, set up Dorian Rodger’s game winning touchdown catch to end Goldsboro’s four-year losing streak to the Warriors. Against Southern Waynein week three, Mclean looked like the unquestionable best player on the field as he caught six passes for 125 yards, including a touchdown to seal the 20-8 win.

“That’s just what I do,” Mclean said.

Ray said that Mclean also gets it done in the classroom and is a leader for the program.

“He’s leading by example. Doing all the right things like he’s supposed to right now,” Ray said. “That’s one of the biggest things in growth for Jykeis is that he’s really became a holistic player. He’s doing the right things in the classroom and on the field. He’s really grew up a lot since we been here.”

Jykeis Mclean is the WJG Sports Football Player of the Week for Week 3.
