Clayton sweeps SSS in GNRC action Friday

One game wasn’t close and the other came down to the wire, but the same team prevailed.

Clayton held off county rival Smithfield-Selma in GNRC action Friday with a 66-39 win in the girls game and 61-58 in the boys game. Darrionna Howard was the dominant force once again leading the way with 30 points for the Comets.

In the girls game, the Spartans, just returning from their COVID quarantine, were hanging around in the first half. However, a few baskets from freshman Maddy Handy put the home team up double digits. Howard really got going in the second half by attacking the basket with ease.

Smithfield-Selma got nice contributions from seniors My’shiah McQueen and Khaliyah Peacock, but it was too late. Clayton continues to take care of business on the girls side as they remain undefeated in conference play.

In the boys game, the Spartans made it interesting at the end thanks to a great effort, but the Comets escaped. Hugh Collins got the home team going with several three pointers along with Eurie Nunley. For the Spartans, Zach McNeill, Jalen Hinton and Devon Jaylyn kept their team in it despite trailing by as many as 17 in the second half.

The Spartans would cut the deficit to three late in the fourth quarter, but a three second violation on the potential tying possession gave the Comets the ball back. SSS would get it down to two with four seconds left and they were forced to foul. After a made free throw and a miss on the second attempt, Justin Bell came up with an offensive rebound with two seconds left to dribble out the clock for the win.

Clayton travels to West Johnston while SSS hosts East Wake Tuesday.
