Wayne Christian girls advance, boys eliminated from CPIC tournament
2 min readThe Wayne Christian varsity girls basketball team advanced to the Coastal Plains Independent Conference Tournament Semifinals with a 60-23 win over John Paul II at home.
Every Eagle (11-9, 3-6 CPIC) scored on Monday night with the high scorer being senior Abi Harrelson’s 12 points. Sophomores Bri Verme added 11 points and Brittany Butts put in 10 points.
The Eagles will face Wayne Country Day on Thursday night.
The Wayne Christian boys did not fare as well, losing to Friendship Christian 89-85 on Monday night at home.
The Hawks (2-18, 1-8 CPIC) got 47 points from junior Tre Brown. Junior Jonah McGee also added in 23 points including seven 3-pointers. Junior Dylan Tahtinen put in 11 points as well.
Brown scored 22 of the 47 in the second quarter out scoring the Eagles (9-12, 2-7 CPIC) 22-19. Friendship outscored Wayne Christian 30-19 in the second quarter to take a 48-39 lead into halftime. The Eagles weren’t able to cut the deficit to less than three in the second half.
Senior Addison Johnson and sophomore Rayshawn Boston led the Eagles with 18 points as leading scorer sophomore Jayquan Curry did not play. Sophomore Javari Ashford totaled 14 points while senior Jaylon Wallace put in 11 points.
The Eagles will wait to see if they make the North Carolina Independent School Athletic Association playoffs next week.
