Wayne Country Day girls win fourth straight CPIC championship; boys fall to Greenfield

The Wayne Country Day girls basketball team won their fourth straight Coastal Plains Independents Conference with a 60-49 win over Greenfield in Friday night’s varsity doubleheader.
The Chargers (21-4, 8-0 CPIC) won their 11th straight game behind 25 points from senior Lexi Jeffreys, who has been apart of all four conference title teams. Freshman Ja’kea Brunson also poured in 16 points en route to clench her third straight conference title.
The Chargers have now won 38 straight conference games during the four year run and could extend the streak to 40 in the conference tournament. The Chargers should be line for a top two seed in the North Carolina Independent Schools Athletic Association.
Greenfield eighth-grader Serenity McNair scored 18 and senior Kaelyn Wall led the Knights (14-9, 6-2 CPIC) with 19.
In the boys game, the Chargers could not withstand a big third quarter run from the Knights, who scored 28 points in the third.
Greenfield clinched its fourth straight CPIC title and 29th straight conference win. The Knights (26-5, 8-0 CPIC) were led by a game-high 29 points from Trey Pittman. Senior Jordan Lynch tallied 18 points. Seniors Collin Guilford and Creighton Lebo pinches in 12 and 11 points respectively. Eighth grader Hampton Evans also knocked in 13 points.
The Chargers (24-5, 6-2 CPIC) have now lost seven straight to the arch rival Greenfield. Wayne Country Day senior Linwood Grandy led the Chargers with 17 points. Sophomore Mike Best added 15 points. Juniors Jaden Cooper and Carlos Raven each put in 11 points.
