WJG SPORTS SCOREBOARD: Aycock rolls over Southern wayne

C.B. Aycock 55, Southern Wayne 19 — Game of the Week

The Falcons varsity football team took down the Saints on a night that could be described as a dream scenario for C.B. Aycock head coach Steve Brooks.

The game had a packed audience, the Falcons (6-1, 2-0 ECC) executed at a high level and the team found themselves in first place in the conference. The seventh-year head coach has never been in first place of 6-1.

“For seven years here, I’ve been told that we can’t do this,” Brooks said. “I just kept believing. Kept digging through the storm and you come out the other side eventually.”

Tae Jackson led the charge early as he ran for 208 yards and nabbed three first half touchdowns. Alijuan Moore had 138 yards receiving and two touchdowns. Clay Matthews had 167 yards through the air, a rushing touchdown and two passing touchdowns. David Reid and Seth Shepherd both had interception return touchdowns.

Brooks made sure to thank the crowd, who he said has been amazing the last three weeks, the cheerleaders and made sure his team watch the band. Now Brooks is hoping the crowd travels with them as they travel to New Bern next Friday to see the 6-1 Bears who lost to D.H. Conley.

“They’ve always been supportive, but this year it’s been on a different level,” Brooks said. “I think they’re riding the momentum with us, and they’re enjoying it as much as I am.”

For Southern Wayne, it’s their fifth straight loss and they’re now 1-6 with a 0-2 record in the conference. The game was tied at 13 and then Aycock scored 42 straight points. Ronnie McClary, Saints head coach, said his team just needs to keep repping and they’ll get better.

“They have to believe in themselves and each other,” McClary said. “Once they do that, we won’t get in our way and be better off than we are.”
