GREENSBORO — Corinth Holders High athletic director and head girls soccer coach Alison Vetterl got one more chance to coach defender Kaelin Sanderford in the North Carolina Soccer Coaches Association East-West All-Star Game on Tuesday.
Vetterl coached the East All-Stars to a 3-2 win. Coaching the all-star game is a one-time deal, and Vetterl said it was incredible to coach the team.
“We had a really good time,” Vetterl said. “They worked hard in the sessions we had. They just wanted to come out here and play some soccer.”
Sanderford was a late add to the roster, but the Meredith College signee started on the back line.
“I’m really blessed to play and experience this before I go to college,” Sanderford said. “It got me ready. It was very unexpected, but I tried my best to compete at their level.”
Sanderford played 70 games for the Pirates and scored a goal and three assists in her career, despite being a defensive player. Sanderford was also a member of the 2017 team that won the 3-A East Region. Sanderford said it was an honor to play for and get a win with her high school coach one more time.
In nine seasons at the school, Vetterl has a record of 123-55-5 with the Pirates. She became the AD in 2017.
