Both Aycock squads fall in season opener at South Central

2 min read

C.B. Aycock didn’t get off to a flying start in their season opener.

Both Golden Falcon basketball teams fell to South Central Wednesday in Winterville. In the girls game, the offense sputtered in a 47-31 defeat as Aycock failed to hit a field goal in the first quarter. While they were able to stay in the game on the defensive end, South Central proved to be too much.

Tamia Myers hit the first basket of the season for Aycock two minutes into the second quarter, but by then, they were down 16. The Golden Falcons had a tough time containing Falcons junior forward Kayla Friend, who had 16 points to lead all scorers.

South Central also got 11 points from junior guard Kayla Smith and eight from sophomore guard Braden Kell. Aycock did hold the Falcons without a point in the fourth quarter, but couldn’t cut into the deficit due to their own offensive struggles.

However, the senior duo of Kaitlyn Smith, who led Aycock with 11 points, and Katlyn Parrish, who had eight, will be one to watch in Wayne County this season.

In the boys game, South Central’s defense blitzed Aycock as the Golden Falcons were doubled up in a 70-35 loss. The Golden Falcons couldn’t contain a balanced effort from the home team led by Mose Tufts’ 13 points and Jamir Wright’s 11.

This game marked the debut of freshman guard Kamran Prince, who was able to get a couple of baskets in the fourth quarter en route to eight points. Seniors Trever Reid (eight points) and Ashton Peronzini (six) also chipped in for Aycock in defeat.

The C.B. Aycock boys will face Southern Wayne Friday in Dudley while the girls’ next contest is at New Bern next Tuesday.
