Brown, Eastern Wayne get revenge against Greene Central

3 min read

GOLDSBORO — The Eastern Wayne Basketball team picked up a 69-66 win over Greene Central behind two 3-pointers from Albert Brown in the final two minutes of the game.

Brown finished with a team-high 21 points for the Warriors (2-3). Brown hit the first 3-pointer to bring Eastern Wayne to 65-64, and then hit the three pointer with 36 seconds left to give his team the lead, 68-65.

“The kid is going to be special,” Eastern Wayne head coach Bill Manning said. “Just big time shots. I don’t think you’ve seen anything yet.”

The Rams (1-1) missed the tying shot on the other end and fouled Darius Best who made the first free throw and missed the second one. On the miss, Eastern Wayne’s Desmond Vaughn and Greene Central’s Dontavius Pettaway got into a scuffle which resulted in Vaughn getting a technical. Rams senior Zach Taylor went to the line and made the first and missed the second with 23 seconds left. Greene Central head coach Theo “Blue” Edwards called a timeout and drew up a play. Senior guard BJ Corbitt passed to Pettaway, who was bumped by Devin Brown so he tossed up the shot and missed to the side. Corbitt got one last shot with seven seconds after Best missed two free throws, but missed.

“We can’t hold on to the basketball and we can’t dribble too much,” Edwards said. “A lot of the stuff I do, we execute, but it’s supposed to happen quicker. The last play with BJ, he has to engage. He can’t go between his legs and do a split, it takes too much time.”

Greene Central held a slim lead during the game for the first 26 minutes of the game with the biggest lead being six points. Edwards was unhappy with his team’s turnovers and fast break execution. Edwards said his team forced shots on the fast break and turned the ball over as fast as they forced the turnovers. The Warriors struggled with the press early on as they had 15 turnovers in the first half, but Manning said Vaughn’s entrance in the second quarter settled the team and turned the game. Vaughn finished with 14 points. Eastern Wayne senior guard Wesley Case notched 13 and big man Devin Brown had 10 points. Corbitt had a game high 28 points with seven 3-pointers made.

Eastern Wayne lost the first matchup on Nov. 26 at Greene Central, 83-61. The Warriors will travel to Hunt on Wednesday and host Goldsboro on Friday night. The Rams will look for redemption Wednesday night at home against Beddingfield.
