Rosewood’s ride ends in fourth round

CREEDMORE — The Rosewood varsity boys soccer was not supposed to be in the fourth round of the 1-A North Carolina High School Athletic Association playoffs, but its attitude of playing hard and working to get better everyday got them there.
After starting out 0-8-1, the Eagles won 12 of their next 15 games. But on Saturday they met Franklin Academy and fell 3-0.
“I’m extremely proud of the boys,” Rosewood head coach Eddie Maldonado said. “One kid plays soccer year round, and the others are baseball players, wrestlers, swimmers and play soccer three months of the year. But the dedication they put in just makes a coach extremely proud. We didn’t win a game until we got into conference and they continued to work, continued to grow and try to get better.”
It was quite the ride for the Eagles as they got a forfeit win in round one over Ocracoke then a 3-2 triple overtime win over Southside and then went three hours away to Manteo and won 3-0. Maldonado said he did not see it coming.
“Nope, no way, now way,” he said when asked about did he foresee the run when the playoffs started. “We did not anticipate this at all. As the season went on, we continued to play harder and better. And it was just fun. That’s what made it exciting, because we didn’t expect to go on this run. It was fun.”
