WJG SPORTS FOOTBALL PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Corinth Holders’ Marcus Bland
2 min readHe’s been making big plays for years, but it seems like they’ve forgotten about him.
“If rather people not know who I am so I can make big plays,” Corinth Holders senior defensive back and wideout Marcus Bland said. “If they still don’t know I am, I’m definitely going to try to let them know.”
Last year, offenses didn’t throw at him and he wound up with only three pass deflections. Through 6 games, he’s got 4 pass deflections and three interceptions.
“I’m surprised he’s had the opportunity to make the plays that he has, because at this point I thought the secret would be out and people would try to go the other way with it,” Corinth Holders head coach Adam Khavari said. “But for people to keep testing him and for him to pass that test every week, it’s been gratifying.”
Bland didn’t play a lot on offense last season, but this year he’s been the most explosive weapon for the 4-1 Pirates with six touchdowns.
“His overall athleticism, his agility, and his speed is what really contributes to his success on offense.” Khavari said. “Giving him the chance to make plays is our job, then he goes out and makes them. His knowledge of the defense and what they’re doing, especially in the secondary having played that position, it’s an advantage for sure.”
Bland’s next hope is to get his first offer to go play at the next level. He has interest from Wake Forest, App State and Elon.
“It’ll mean the world almost,” Bland said. “That’s one of my dreams as a kid. Just knowing my father and what he did. Doing it for my father. Doing it for my family. I just love playing. So that’s amazing.”
