TARBORO — Greene Central competed in their final tune up ahead of their 2019 season opener by traveling to Tarboro High School on Friday night to compete in an action packed football jamboree.
The Rams faced Farmville Central, Southwest Edgecombe, Manteo and two-time defending 1AA state champion Tarboro on Friday. It was an experience that the squad needed to prepare for the new season. Progress was certainly made throughout the day according to first year head coach Jay Wilson.
“We were the physical team I wanted us to be,” he said. “We had a scrimmage earlier in the week and I didn’t think we showed enough physicality, so I’m very pleased with the physical nature we played with tonight.”
Coach Wilson and his squad were picked to finish fifth in the 2-A Eastern Carolina Conference preseason coaches poll. The Rams have made six straight trips to the state playoffs.
“I saw our offensive line do their thing,” senior wide receiver/defensive end Debo Pigford said. “Our running backs hit the hole and made plays. The receivers blocked well and we need those things to win games.”
Wilson’s varsity football coaching debut will be on the road against South Central next Friday night. Expect the Rams to have a run heavy offense and a physical defense.
“I hope the team can build on this and be ready for the regular season,” Wilson added. “Our offense isn’t fancy, but it’s forceful. If we stick to it, the results will come.”
