KINSTON — The Wayne Country Day varsity boys soccer team continued its strong start to the season on Tuesday.
The Chargers defeated Arendell Parrott Academy 2-0 and improved to 3-0 on the season. They’ve begun the year by outscoring their opponents 7-0 in their first three matches.
Arendell Parrott did have some chances to score, but junior goalkeeper Thomas Sumner made sure to preserve the shutout for the Chargers with three saves. Head coach Steve Ellis believed the scorching heat got to both teams eventually, but he was pleased with his team’s performance.
“We came out strong in the first 10 minutes,” he said. “I think we could’ve had more goals, but the heat drained both teams out. Overall, it was a positive performance from the team, but we have to be more clinical.”
Chargers forward Marquise Newell scored the opener 90 seconds into the match after a Patriots turnover in their defensive third. He then made it 2-0 with 12 minutes left in the first half with a left footed shot inside the box.
Senior forward Nehemiya Shaw collected an assist for the Chargers, who will host the O’Neal School on Thursday looking to continue their undefeated start.
“We want to play with a lot of pace,” Ellis added. “But we’re going to take it one game at a time. I think we have a really good team this season.”
